Jamer L. Boyer, the Professor of Greek at Grace Theological Seminar in 1962 wrote a interesting article on how eytmology is to be used in hermeneutics. It’s worth a read, which you can read here. Basically Boyer states that it is important to understand what a word means and we shouldn’t assume the reader or hearer knows the word used. Languages are fluid not static. Words do change meaning as people forget what the idea behind the word is. If one goes wild with etymology they can jump the gun in over correcting. The key according to Boyer is learn the meaning of the words, check the context of the word in the passage, and then explain what it means to get the idea across.
