Little Lamb, Who Made Thee?

William Blake was born November 28, 1757. Two hundred and fifty two years after his birth his voice still speaks. His voice speaks not of himself but of his great love the Lamb of God. One of his most famous poems and a favorite of John Piper’s is now one of my favorites. Piper was right when he said that it is a good launch into Advent to think of Christ as the Lamb. Oh, the humility of Christ to be called and to become a Little Lamb as that defenseless baby in a manger. Humility was incarnated in the first advent.

Little Lamb, Who Made Thee?

Little Lamb, who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee?
Gave thee life, and bid thee feed,
By the stream and o’er the mead;
Gave thee clothing of delight,
Softest clothing, woolly, bright;
Gave thee such a tender voice,
Making all the vales rejoice?
Little Lamb, who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee?

Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee,

Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee.

He is called by thy name,
For He calls Himself a Lamb.
He is meek, and He is mild;
He became a little child.
I a child, and thou a lamb,
We are called by His name.
Little Lamb, God bless thee!
Little Lamb, God bless thee
