of beginnings and endings

The following is a poem written about the events of the last 48 hours. In the past two days I have seen beginnings and endings that make the reality of eternity so tangible and real.

His three month smile delighted my night. A new world always before him as he found no focus for his eyes instead dancing here and there as they darted past me to stare at the wonder of soft light from his night lamp.
Tiny hands grasped mine as I kissed the unseen garland crown of his head. I laid him in his bed to rest from another day of new beginnings.

His three score smile delighted my day, his eyes focusing on me and past me to a television that offered flickering light to hide his trepidation of the unknown coming as his day faced ending. His large man hands grasped mine as I kissed his cheek, his shadow beard showed signs of grace and strength as we prayed over his heart to assure his head that God was not ready yet to possibly lay a crown on his gray lined ridge.

My three decade life delights in the grace of the gift we call life. So short yet so filled with those sweet moments that flow like the northern brooks that flow along the off beat path. My heart beats in part in the chest of two other men. My child who I call son is safe in his crib his little chest beats to the rhythm of life. My father who calls me son lays in his bed asleep as his heart beats in thanks for another day of life.
