The Church is my mother, and sister, and brother

A facebook friend of mine is struggling with his religious identity. I for a season was doing the same thing. I and my wife joined the EPC last Sunday. After three years of transition from super duper Southern Baptist to nominal baptist, to baptist in the closet, to Reformed, to Calvinist, to a Presbyterian in the EPC. I get his struggle.

A Catholic friend on the above friend’s facebook page asked me in reply to a comment how we can be united if we aren’t in the Catholic Church, by which he means Roman Catholic Church? Below is my response.

You asked what can unite us? Anyone that has Christ as their Lord & Savior is my mother, sister, and brother. We are united by Christ under one adoptive Father.

Fellowship and unity are found in Christ through truth, grace, and humility. As Calvin said the Church is my mother and God is my Father. I have found more of the Truth, Grace, Humility, and Beauty of God through the Spirit moving in Wittenberg and Geneva then in particular any other Christian traditions that I have experienced.

It was Christ who said “For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother” (Matthew 12:50). I know all who claim to be Christian sadly are not. Yet I hope that Christ has many brothers in many different fields. Jesus said in John 10:16 “And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.” The tense of Jesus statement is will be. So that means we are not there yet but through God’s sovereign grace all who are his on the Way.

Welcome to EPC. My family are members here in Marshall, TX. It has been such a blessing to be apart of such a great group of people.

    Blessings,

I think one of the big problems is that we try to find our identity in labels, or denominations. Our identity, as you alluded to should be in Christ; obedience/faithfulness to Him, as well as love of God, and His people.
