“It ain’t how hard you can hit, its about how hard you can be hit and keep moving forward.”
I have yetUPDATE: I have seen and it rocks (no pun intended)! to see the movie but The quote above really got me thinking of a quote in Isaiah 40:27-31, Isaiah (a OT prophet about 700 some odd years before Jesus) asks the following to the nation of Israel before one of its darkest days was about to occur:
“Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God”? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
Isaiah was saying that God was not ready to give up on Israel even though they had given up on themselves. God wanted Israel to win even when he knew in the short run they felt like losers. More importantly Isaiah was telling Israel that God was not growing weary even when they were. God was there for them, even when they were weak God was behind them and nothing could shake Him. Fast forward seven hundred years to the time of Jesus. Jesus told people that God wanted to be on thier side if they would believe in Him and that God would supply them with all that they really needed. He said “come to me all who are over burdened and I will give you rest.” Sometimes we who are Christians forget that Jesus came not to call us to become self sufficient winners in every situation and to do everything on our own, instead he came to tell us that we can rely on him in every situation especially when times are rough.
Sometimes life hits us hard and knocks us down. In those situations we are faced with the option of moving forward, standing still, or going back. Rocky’s quote has two great points that have spiritual connections with the passages above. First with God on our side we can be hit, and keep moving forward. God is the best ring man in the world and if we know Jesus then God is in our corner. With him on our side we know that we have someone giving us advice on how to make it through the next round who really knows how to get us through until the end. The second thought is simple, God wants his people to rely on Him so they can keep moving forward. If you ever see a Rocky movie, you will notice that Rocky always has a good ring man on the side not only cheering him on but also giving him directions on how to make it through to the end. Sometimes we think God has forgotten us when times are tough. Actually that may be the time when we can best hear God’s voice. When the world is pumbling us, God is there waiting to pick us up and because God is our ring man, we know we have the ultimate source of strength to draw upon. During difficult times it is good to remember that God is on our side, he is there when we need rest, advice, and encouragment to make it through.
The word gospel means good news. There is tremendous good news in the idea that God is on our side and is there to help us make it through the ring of life.
